[ISLMA-Share] Library renovation

I actually asked for shorter shelving in my remodel happening this summer. This allows me to keep my fiction, graphic novels, and other high interest stuff out in the middle of the library and much more visible to students. These shelves will be mobile so I can move things around as needed. I will have some tall shelving against the walls, but there actually isn’t a lot of wall space, so this seemed like the best solution to help with sight lines. I am slightly concerned about the lowest shelf being too low, but I think the mobility will be worth the trade-off.

We are doing a mix of gray industrial carpet tile and some wood-look vinyl tile (it’s more strips than square tile, but I can’t remember what it is called right now. I know it is something that you don’t wax.). Obviously, I don’t have info on how it wears because I don’t have it yet, but we visited some schools with the same type of products that have been finished for a couple of years, and theirs looked really good still. I don’t think you can lay laminate over carpet.

Subject: [ISLMA-Share] Library renovation

I am hearing talk in my district about some basic library renovation. I would like feedback on 2 items:

Floor: laminate? (wood look--laid over existing carpet) vs. carpet/industrial carpet tile

Shelving: height for Jr/Sr high school (Talk is of cutting tall shelving in half to make back to back shelving. Currently all of my shelving is tall, but reachable, and against the walls, with an additional 2 free standing units)

I HAVE NOT been asked about these renovations and am getting nervous about what might be some big mistakes. Then again, I may be back in the classroom next year and the library would run with an aide or not at all.

Please give me thoughts on your own experiences. I don't see low shelving units in a HS as being desirable.
