[ISLMA-Share] Library renovation

When you say "tilt the books spine up on the low shelves" do you mean that put the books so the spine is parallel to the shelf surface, or do you have some kind of device that keeps them at a 45 degree angle?

As a relatively tall person, I loathe the bottom shelf :)

I agree. Our shelves are all low (chest height) and shelving is hard on the back. We do tilt the books spine up on the low shelves, though, so students can easily see the call numbers on the bottom shelf.

Be sure to think about sound when you choose between carpet and hard surface flooring. Things could get a lot louder with hard surface...

I currently have low shelving for a 9-12 grade space and I really don’t like it. Teens do not like searching low stacks for things. Shelving books is hard on knees and backs and big projects like inventory and weeding is downright painful.

I make use of all my space on top of my shelving to display anything and everything and that is primarily what kids check out. It’s right at their eye level and easy to browse.

If possible, I would recommend NOT having low shelving.

I have low shelving because I have limited wall space. I like them and they create adequate sight lines since all my shelving sticks out into the open space of our library. The issue would be have enough shelving for your collections. Our shelves are double-sided and our collection is about 6,000 print volumes.

Why you not being involved in the renovation recommendations?

Hope this helps.

I am hearing talk in my district about some basic library renovation. I would like feedback on 2 items:

Floor: laminate? (wood look--laid over existing carpet) vs. carpet/industrial carpet tile

Shelving: height for Jr/Sr high school (Talk is of cutting tall shelving in half to make back to back shelving. Currently all of my shelving is tall, but reachable, and against the walls, with an additional 2 free standing units)

I HAVE NOT been asked about these renovations and am getting nervous about what might be some big mistakes. Then again, I may be back in the classroom next year and the library would run with an aide or not at all.

Please give me thoughts on your own experiences. I don't see low shelving units in a HS as being desirable.
