I make them have a pass to come to the library. I feel this weeds out a lot of kids who would just come to cause trouble. If they are working on research or an assignment, I let them stay the whole lunch hour (30 min). I do allow students to come in and play games on the computers, but they can only do that for 15 minutes, so either they go to lunch and eat first, or they come here and then go to lunch. If students are too loud, I do ask them to leave.

Subject: [ISLMA-Share] lunchtime in the library

Good Afternoon and Happy Friday!,

Our 7/8 students are allowed to come to the library during lunch (they have to eat lunch first). I'm trying to strike a healthy balance between not having too many "rules" and having the kids get out of hand and too rowdy while here. I feel lately I've been baby-sitting a lot.

What are some of your guidelines for students in the library during lunch? What tips do you have for creating an atmosphere that's both welcoming AND conducive to working/studying/reading. I don't need it to be quiet, but I'd like to keep it fro being as loud and rowdy as the cafeteria can be.

Thanks,
