Hi Ryan - Here are a few of the things we do when weeding:

I compare last date checked out to the age of the book. I'm more aggressive
weeding non-fiction, but I would caution against weeding a big hunk of your
collection unless you have the budget to replace it with more current
titles.

Think about the cycles and reading styles of your students. I don't weed
fiction that has circulated in the past 4 years - some classes will find a
series irresistible, but another class won't for 4 years. Also, 'buddy
reading' is a big deal at our school. So I may not need 4 copies of a
title, but I definitely need 2. A title might not be used simply because
there isn't a copy for the buddy reader... Also pay attention to the
curriculum - one of our grades does a biome project EVERY year, so I am
stingy about deleting titles in that area.

I give first dibs on deleted books to teachers - put a few loaded book
trucks in the lounge. When they've gone through them, I make them available
to students to take. Be sure you've removed or obliterated the bar code, or
people will try to return them to the library...

If there are any left after that, there is usually a charity that will take
them - Goodwill, Bernie's Books, etc., and recently some of our teachers
have had ties to teachers in Mexico and Central America that are looking
for ANYTHING in English.

If any of your collection was acquired through a government program or
grant like Title I, be sure you know the rules for disposing of those
materials.

You will be so refreshed when this is over! Good luck -
