I've brought in lots of authors and they have been grateful for similar
things that I do for them. Most important is make them feel important and
welcome in the school! Tell everyone that s/he is coming to visit!

   - Prep the kids in advance. Introduce the books, read them, talk about
them. Sometimes I have my students write a question on an index card
because most author's will do a question/answer period of time.
   - I always have my students make a Welcome ____________! sign, and then
they all write a personal message and sign it. I display it on the outside
of the building or in front of the table where they sit to autograph books.
Many authors have actually taken their sign with them when they leave.
   - Get the audio/visual needs s/he might need and have it set up before
   his/her arrival.

   - Water -- have two bottles of water available; one cold, the other room
   temperature
    for personal preference.
   - Create a display of his/her books in the library. (Most authors are
willing to autograph your library copies if you ask!)

   - If you're selling his books, try to take pre-orders and have the kids
pay in advance. This eliminates tears when kids don't have the money
in the excitement of the moment
   .
   - Set up an autograph table.
   - Mark the title page with a post-it note with the child's name so the
author can correctly spell it. Put it in the book like it's a book mark
   for quick opening.
   - Ask someone to assist you that day.

   - Take lots of photos!
   - Have fun!
