Wow, Jeanne, that is spectacular!

Beautiful job keeping it relevant and hitting the specifics that they need to know.

This is one of my favorite presentations of the year! I just had mine with sophomores last week as our focus is, “What does your online life tell others about you?” so it fits right in with their job searching unit. I hit hard employers, coaches, and college recruiters. I also focus on not just the dangers but how to use their digital footprint to their advantage.

Our three goals with this presentation are:
1. students understand that nothing is really private
2. students consider the implications of online activities with regards to potential present and future audiences
3. students will learn how to fix potentially hazardous behavior

I use lots of real examples from national media but also our area and our own school. Here is a link to my Google Slide show if any of it would help: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1LDSuOuu8SexxPpvmH1fRtsji7_0AkTJQv0OYwtJEnF0/edit?usp=sharing

I had my 6th graders this year do the Digital Compass Game from Common Sense Media. https://www.digitalcompass.org/game/index.html<https://www.digitalcompass.org/game/index.html>

I really liked how the game let you go through and make different decisions (there were about 9 different outcomes for each character you could play). Some of the characters had VERY serious consequences for their actions, such as going to jail, while others were still serious but not in a legal way, such as losing a friend. I felt that this really resonated with the students, and then also allowed them to explore how various actions and decisions lead to different outcomes. I even encouraged students to make decisions they knew were wrong ones in order for them to be able to see what the outcome could be.

Hope this helps!

Hello, fellow Information-jockeys!

I was chatting with a counselor the other day and he was talking about how one of the hardest parts of his job is dealing with the aftermath of stuff students say to each other on social media. Basically, he said that just a few years ago kids would cool off during the weekend, but now they spend the weekend poking each other online and come in on Monday ready to fight.

Does anyone teach a lesson on the digital footprint? I was thinking about all of the news stories about sexting, cyberbullying, kids who have been expelled for FB pics, etc.

Most of the digital citizenship stuff we have as policy is really old- like 2006 "Don't tell anyone your real name even if they're your grandma."

I'm curious how you're all updating it.
