[ISLMA-Share] copyright question: students recording themselves reading & giving away recordings as a charity project?

If the picture book they want to read and record is in the public domain,
there is no problem. However, many contemporary books explicitly include a
statement that recordings or other reproduction by mechanical or electronic
means are rights reserved to the copyright holder. I would suggest writing
to the copyright holder, describing the project and asking permission.
Perhaps if the recording came with a paid copy of the book, they might
consider it.
