[ISLMA-Share] copyright question: students recording themselves reading & giving away recordings as a charity project?

According to the book Copyright for Schools: A Practical Guide (by Carol
Simpson, published by Linworth Books), any audio recording of a print work
is called a "phonorecord." It is against copyright law to read a book
onto a recording of any kind. It is "exactly the same thing, according to
the law, as putting that book on the photocopier and copying every page."
The book specifically lists "reading [items] onto tapes to take to senior
citizens, as a service project" as one of the examples of copyright
violation. Doesn't look like your teacher is going to be able to do this
project in the way she/he orginally envisioned.
