I always include graphic novels for book lists & book talks for lower level
reading classes. Sometimes the teacher need some persuading, but the
students love them and feel confident reading them. Some that circulate
heavily with our lower level students:

My Friend Dahmer & Trashed by Derf Backderf
The Boxer by Reinhard Kleist
Michael Jordan: Bull on Parade & 21: the Story of Roberto Clemente by
Wilfred Santiago
Andre the Giant by Box Brown
The Boxer by Reinhard Kleist
Yummy by Greg Neri; Randy DuBurke
The Shadow Hero by Gene Luen Yang; Sonny Liew
Anya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol
Monster by Guy A. Sims; Dawud Anyabwile; Walter Dean Myers
Locke & Key series by Gabriel Rodriguez; Joe Hill
and some schools prefer not to have this because of its violence, but The
Walking Dead series by Robert Kirkman is *always* checked out.

I would also highly recommend Gail Giles books. Students can't get enough
of them!
