[ISLMA-Share] Library Clerk Training

Another issue might be the overall procedures. We all know running a barcode reader is more difficult than it looks to others. The smallest error can create havoc.

Once upon a time, I taught at a different school. Since I was the new guy, I had to use someone else’s procedures. These procedures didn’t work for me. The harder I tried the worst it got. I was so glad I left.

Well, for the past decade plus, I’ve enjoyed my own school library (It’s good to be the monarch). I set the procedures and policies. For the first 3 years, it was just me in a school of roughly 1200 students with approximately 50,000 check outs. I had to get creative. I developed methods to make self-check out and self-check in work.

Then I earned an aide. I had to adjust to another person’s style. For example, when a student comes in on a pass and has forgotten his/her ID, I enter the student’s teacher’s name into Destiny at the self-check out station and then look up the student. My aide will directly type in the student’s name. Her ability to remember students’ names is better than mine. Both methods work, so it is no big issue. I am lucky that her strengths balance out my weaknesses and visa-versa.

I think you may wish to see what your aide’s strengths are and work with her. You may wish to review your procedures to see if they can be adjusted to help her succeed.

Sincerely,

Alan, Librarian serving Brooks Middle School

I am having some issues with a new clerk in my library. She is doing her job, but making a lot of mistakes, does anyone have suggestions/materials for training a clerk to be more careful during check in and out? We are having a lot of books come back without getting checked in and books getting checked out to the wrong student account.

Thanks for any ideas...
