Has anyone had success with who's reading?

We use this program at our 3-5 building. It is similar to Accelerated Reader. The students take an inventory test at the beginning of the year which evaluates their reading comprehension and assigns them a lexile. Books which have quizzes already created have to then be labeled with a color dot which coordinates to a lexile band. This identifies the books as having a quiz already created. There is a lot of work on the librarian's part to color code the books. Once it is done, you just have to keep up with new books as you purchase them. Not all books have quizzes, but a teacher (or librarian) can create their own quiz for any book.

Our middle school does not use this program so I can't speak for how it works at that level. We use it heavily and there are lots of reports available for teachers to show how many books kids are passing quizzes on and at what level of accuracy. It is very motivating for kids at the 3rd -5th level and each class sets quarterly goals for points earned when quizzes are passed. It definitely increases the kids' accountability for books checked out at the library.

I run the program completely and allow teachers to access their kids progress.

It is an expensive program, so I would be sure all will use it prior to investing in it. If you have any further questions you can email me directly at kkibitlewski at d56.org<mailto:kkibitlewski at d56.org>.

Subject: [ISLMA-Share] Scholastic Reading Counts

Hi,

We have a new 7th grade English teacher and at her last school she used Scholastic's program, "Reading Counts." Is anyone familiar with this? Can you give me any information about it and how the Librarian is involved?

She would like to continue the program here (it sounds like because the quizzes are ready-made and grade themselves), but it is not free.

Just any feedback would be much appreciated!!

Thank you,
