My understanding is that if you do not teach classes then you are exempt
from PERA evaluations involving student growth. This includes school
librarians, guidance counselors, and others that don't do direct
instruction. There is still some discussion though about whether those of
us that do teach regular library lessons should be evaluated using student
growth. Some are saying it is up to the district to decide, some say all
librarians are exempt no matter what, and some say if you teach you affect
student growth and should be evaluated as such. So it will be interesting
to see how it plays out over the next few months. Personally I think if we
teach regular lessons then we should show student growth because that
elevates our status as a teacher to an administrator. It means a little
bit of extra work but if we want to be seen as professionals and educators
then we need to prove that we are valuable in the lives and growth of
students.
