When I taught in high school, students were excused from exams based on
their attendance and on the teacher's choice. If a student had less than 4
absences with an A, 3 with a B, and 2 with a C, he/she was excused from the
exams for which the teacher agreed with the policy. Students with a D or F
in a class have to take the finals. I taught German and found having my
kiddos there on a daily basis was more important than having them succeed
at a test at the end of the semester, so I used the policy. I know it cut
down on the kids who stayed home for minor illnesses such as colds. It
also affected those classes where teachers didn't use the policy, too,
because students would schedule their dental appointments, dr. appts, etc.
during those class hours. On exam days, students just showed up for the
classes in which they had exams and left when they didn't.
