[ISLMA-Share] Attendance

Our principal does a daily update on Attendance.  Every morning during  announcements she includes, “As you know our goal is a 96% attendance rate and yesterday, we were at 97%! That’s amazing. I am so pleased!”  Or “As you know, our goal is a 96% attendance rate, and scholars, yesterday we missed our goal.  We were at 94% and that is just not good enough.  Make sure you check in with your friends who were absent and let them know that we missed them.  Each and every one of you is vital to our school community.”   It happens every day!  Last year we hit our goal for the whole year.  I am sure a lot of it was the daily affirmation, especially during the winter when no one wants to come!

We also do surprises for kids who have 100% attendance for a stretch of time—they will get a dress down day.   There are Attendance challenges:  everyone who has 100% attendance for stretch of time gets their name in a raffle for some prize.  We try to both encourage attendance and reward dilligance.

Attendance is tricky—especially in an elementary school—because sometimes it isn’t the kids’ fault!  But staying on it regularly made a huge difference for us.

Things we've used:
Students with perfect attendance are allowed to leave early (with the last 30 minutes of the day being our "advisory study hall". time).

Seniors with perfect attendance do not have to take second semester finals.
