I am in grades 6-8. I mostly do these lessons with 6th grade, but when I started I was doing them with everyone, since the librarians before me did not do lessons on a regular basis. I do a call number lesson and quiz. I also made an alphabetizing lesson, but I haven't used it yet. I do a Dewey lesson and play the game where the book has to get put back on the "shelf" in the right spot. If you have a SMART Board, let me know and I'll send you the lessons if you want. Here's the link to the Dewey game: http://web.archive.org/web/20070127034103/http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/s2s/utopia/library4/src/library4.swf?

Subject: [ISLMA-Share] Call number training

Good morning,
As I go from library to library in my district, I am seeing that a lot of students are struggling to find books, because they don't understand how call numbers work, and they don't really understand how to alphabetize, so even if they understand the concept of the call number, they cannot find the book in the labeled section. What types of lessons do you do with students so they understand these concepts? I am noticing this really K-12, so all types of lessons are welcome.
Thanks!
Jill Bennin
