[ISLMA-Share] Lemont removing books?

The reason is because these texts are mandated reading by outsiders and are
not in control of the parents. The parents want to be, and believe they
are, in control of the other aspects of their children's lives--tv, movies,
internet (of course, usually they are not)--but this process is meant to
give parents some semblance of control. This is America. It's always been
this way. Sometimes it's been better, but sometimes it's been worse.

The recent removal of *To Kill a Mockingbird* and *Huckleberry Finn* from
schools in one district in Virginia for their use of racial slurs is
another example. Here's a link to that:

For a country founded on the idea of freedom, we have a long history of and
a strong bent toward trying to control the minds and thoughts of others,
especially those who disagree with us. It's kind of a freedom for me to
be me but not for you to be you.

Whenever I see a story like this it makes me sad, and it reminds me of
Talking Heads: "Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was."
