I am responsible for all the novels in our building, unless the teacher purchased with own money. Ours are in a separate collection. I store in a back room. We started by barcoding novels they use regularly. It helps with getting every thing back. The students pay $10. if they loose it.

Our collection code is Novels.

The teachers send the students to the library to check out and return the books and if they don't turn it in on time, they receive an overdue notice, just like they do for any other late book. They only pay a fine if they actually lose the book, but then they pay to replace it. I only do this for the books in my own building, though. We have multiple teachers that teach the same classes, and by using this system, everyone always knows where the books are and students lose fewer books. I also keep smaller sets of titles (10-12 copies)in the back room which are used for book clubs, literature circles, and small reading classes.
