i really love Battle of the Books. We have 3 rounds within the class and then the team with the most points from each round competes against the other winning teams from their grade level. I use Haiku Deck to make a slide show to introduce the books and I just love the excitement as the kids read the books. Last year I added a new part where I gave each team a different quote and they had to explain how it relates to one of the books - the quote is general enough to fit with several books, but I love to see how the kids defend their answers and provide evidence from the book.

I also love the alternative energy research project that I do with my 5th graders. It's changed over the years, but basically they research 1 of 5 types of alternative energy and create a Google Slide presentation. After every group has presented their information, the class votes and we have an Academy Awards ceremony for the different categories: Most Cost Efficient, least disruptive to the environment, Biggest impact on society, greatest every day use, easiest to transport, Most variety of uses.
