Marcia is correct, a written work is copyright once it is created. If the student or teacher wants to register the copyright that is done by going to the government website, filling in a form and paying $35. But really, the only reason to register the copyright would either be to give the student and class a lesson on how it is done and the importance for a creator to register for legal protection. The other reason would be if the teacher or student thinks someone might try to plagiarize the work and they want maximum their protection during a lawsuit. Unregistered copyrights have grave difficulty recovering monetary damages.  B A Binns bab9660 at yahoo.com
