In answer to the question regarding public libraries charging money—the public library fee is included in your tax bill if you are within their area. If you live in an unincorporated area and want to use the public library for online services, checkouts, interlibrary loans, etc. , they will charge you the equivalent amount as the families who pay through their taxes.

Jill -

Several years ago we opened our library 2 nights a week during the summer. One teacher held a book club during that time, students could take AR tests, and we had Rosetta Stone English set up for our ELL parents to use. We used the same rules for checkout that we had during the school year, and had no problem. Our only issue was that the program was set up for the benefit of our low-income students, but they weren't the ones who used it.

I'm astounded - what kind of public library charges ANY amount of money for a library card???!!!!

This summer my school is going to offer families the option of checking out up to 10 books for the summer. (I might be crazy, but I can't see keeping them locked up, especially since a large percentage of my students do not qualify for a public library card unless they purchase it for about $350.)
Do any of you check out books for the summer?
Please share your guidelines, permission slip, and advice.
There is a blog post about checking out books for the summer at https://readingbyexample.com/. (May 13, 2016 post)
Thanks for any advice!
