[ISLMA-Share] Checking out books for the summer

At my high school, I have typically opened the library one morning a week during the summer for checking out books and book club and also allowed students to check out books for the summer that are due back a week into the new school year. I haven't lost a single book this way, and it's an especially important option for the many students in my district who do not have public library access.

Last summer and this summer, the entire school building will be off limits to everyone over the summer because of construction and asbestos abatement. Since students can't come in to get more books over the summer, I am allowing students to check out up to 10 books instead of the usual 4, and also really pushing our E-Read Illinois ebook access as an option for summer reading. I also hold a used book sale during the last 2 weeks of the school year as another way to get books into students' hands. Anything to keep them reading over the summer!

We do check out books over the summer.  Students can check out 1 book.  If they want to check out another, they just return the one they have and come to the office, where recommended books are.  Further the LMC is open 1x a week for checkout, AR quizes, help with the Summer optional projects, etc.

Also, some of the students in our district live in unincorporated areas.  The amount they pay for a library card, is very expensive.  This year I looked into eRead Illinois.
"eRead Illinois provides Illinois libraries (public, school, academic, and special) with affordable access to e-books. This shared collection may be a library’s primary e-book collection, or may augment the e-books that a library already offers its cardholders. It gives all students access to eBooks (that those who have a public library card can access.)"

It only costs $250 (because out district is less than 1,000 students],) I would highly recommend looking into it.  Here is a link to their website: https://ereadillinois.com/become-member-library.

Jill and all,

I am at a HS only district, but 3 years ago I started allowing students the opportunity to check out books for the summer. The due date is the first day of class so that I always know if the item was for summer check out.  I do open 4 mornings a summer, but mostly I get incoming freshmen working on honors summer assignments and very few students checking out and returning books. The books come back in August and the students get to read.  It is only recently that all our students became part of a public library district, so I understand what it is to have some families without public library access.  I say go for it, and allow the books to go out over the summer.  What is the point of letting them gather dust?

We don't have the option to open the library during the summer.

Families who qualify for library cards pay for them in their taxes, so families who don't live in the library district have to pay for them directly. I often have to explain that to families.

Jill -

Several years ago we opened our library 2 nights a week during the summer. One teacher held a book club during that time, students could take AR tests, and we had Rosetta Stone English set up for our ELL parents to use. We used the same rules for checkout that we had during the school year, and had no problem. Our only issue was that the program was set up for the benefit of our low-income students, but they weren't the ones who used it.

I'm astounded - what kind of public library charges ANY amount of money for a library card???!!!!

Do any of you check out books for the summer?

Please share your guidelines, permission slip, and advice.

There is a blog post about checking out books for the summer at https://readingbyexample.com/. (May 13, 2016 post)

Thanks for any advice!
