[ISLMA-Share] Checking out books for the summer

I believe that if students live in unincorporated areas and do not pay taxes to support a public library, they have to pay to use one.

We let high school students check out books and have not had a problem with it.

I really thought that Illinois library district boundaries were drawn so that everyone was covered - like school districts.  In my school, kids are in 4 different districts, but everyone is covered. Are there gaps in less populated areas?

Jill and all,

I am at a HS only district, but 3 years ago I started allowing students the opportunity to check out books for the summer. The due date is the first day of class so that I always know if the item was for summer check out.  I do open 4 mornings a summer, but mostly I get incoming freshmen working on honors summer assignments and very few students checking out and returning books. The books come back in August and the students get to read.  It is only recently that all our students became part of a public library district, so I understand what it is to have some families without public library access.  I say go for it, and allow the books to go out over the summer.  What is the point of letting them gather dust?

Families who qualify for library cards pay for them in their taxes, so families who don't live in the library district have to pay for them directly. I often have to explain that to families.

One teacher held a book club during that time, students could take AR tests, and we had Rosetta Stone English set up for our ELL parents to use. We used the same rules for checkout that we had during the school year, and had no problem. Our only issue was that the program was set up for the benefit of our low-income students, but they weren't the ones who used it.

I'm astounded - what kind of public library charges ANY amount of money for a library card???!!!!
