[ISLMA-Share] Aurora Beacon-News: West Aurora cuts school librarians

I started working in libraries some forty years ago. I was told then that it was not a good career choice since technology would put librarians out of business. Well obviously I am still here so that part wasn't quite true but there have been some bumps here and there. It has been my experience that as technology increases the more librarians are needed but the perception that librarians aren't needed also increases. It seems most pronounced in administrators so I think there is a gap in education schools that needs to be addressed somehow. Please note that I am not speaking of all administrators--I have worked with awesome library supporters.

Now here is the hard truth about school library jobs (and I recognize that it is just my opinion and nothing more)--no matter how hard librarians work, no matter how valued librarians are to the school community, no matter on down the line of things librarians are told to do--the bottom line is always money and what the law requires.

I am retiring this year and not giving up the fight but slowing down a little. For those of you still in the field I suggest tackling the school code requirements because money and the law will always decide what administrators will cut. Librarians in concert are awesome at getting things done.

Hope everyone's summer is wonderful.
