This should help you. It’s an article from School Library Journal: http://www.slj.com/2011/04/sljarchives/the-privacy-problem

This quote, from the 5th paragraph, sums it up, “Although these protections vary greatly, no state law gives teachers or principals the right to access a student’s library circulation record.”

I totally agree and I wish professors, who are teaching future librarians, not give out inaccurate information.

Which is why I am seeking out the help of you wonderful folks!

I just had a teacher come to me and want records of a student’s checkout to see if he was checking them out or cheating on his AR test.

I told her “no”. She was unware about this, as the last librarian aide was giving out this info. I refused too.

I believe a re-education of this is in need, or at least a stronger voice for the students.

Hi,

Is there some sort of law that states that school librarians are NOT to give out information on what a student has checked out?

I personally have my system delete the records once a book has been returned...similar to the public library.

My student teacher was told in class that there is some sort of law protecting student checkout information.

Do you know of this law?

Thanks!

Linda
