[ISLMA-Share] FY17 Federal Library Funding Faces First Key Hurdle

Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) is on this committee. He needs to hear from all of
us on the importance of LSTA funds for Illinois. Keep the funding level
with last year. IAL funds are handled by the Dept of Ed and are the only
place in the federal budget where funds are earmarked for school libraries.
It is a competitive grant. Maintaining the funds means Illinois schools
have a better opportunity to receive one of these grants.

ALA and its champions in Congress are pushing hard this year to keep almost
$200 million in funding for critical programs funded under the Library
Services and Technology Act (LSTA) and Innovative Approaches to Literacy
(IAL) program. Unfortunately, President Obama's FY 2017 budget proposes
cutting LSTA by more than half a million dollars! We've learned that staff
to key Senators are focusing this week on what the Senate Labor, Health and
Human Services Subcommittee's all-important appropriations bill will do for
- or to - LSTA, as well as IAL. We need tell their bosses -- the members of
the Subcommittee -- not to cut federal support for either of these critical
programs.

least one Member of this key Senate Subcommittee, and possibly two! They
need to hear from you now about what cutting LSTA, in particular, could
mean for your library and community.
