Okay, here's (maybe) "half a good idea."

How about a puzzle or "Break Out Room" style activity?

3-5 posters around the room contain an age level appropriate paragraph and
graphics -- short passages from the year's reading list.

Each poster ends with a question that gets solved from the information and
art preceding it.

For example, a paragraph from Winnie the Pooh with Piglet and a red balloon
and the question is "What color is the balloon?".

If each station includes a paragraph from some of the the year's reading
list, the activity promotes the school's reading programs while also
promoting parents reading to their kids.

If each answer is a color, and there's a table with colored squares (or
boxes) that must be put in order to "solve" the combination, the activity
creates engagement and memory. (Or maybe a sequence -- "cat", "dog",
"horse"...)

There's some questions on how to make it work with multiple grade levels,
for example. But, it's a start -- "half a good idea".
