Hello –

We also hold a B&N book fairs for all three of my schools (2 middles and a High). Im not a big themed person, but I do all the items listed below.

Some teacher offer extra credit for coming in, or a raffle ticket if we sign off ona slip.

We do wrap gifts – made some money last year, but not a lot.

I stumbled upon one about a month ago that were handing out bead necklaces once people came in the door “are you here to support ______” and gave them beads (kinda cool)

Bottom line --- my high school made $1000 (we take in B&N gift cards) and the middles made around $500 -$800.

Nice thing is that gift card can go for anything. So I bought a Nook for a raffle, and puzzles, and some maker stuff, plus all my trendy books.

Good luck!

Amy

My district has had Barnes and Noble in-store book fairs for the past few years (in addition to our Scholastic ones that take place in school)

We absolutely love them! They are really no work on your part, BN can provide a theme or you can plan your own. This year my colleague in another building created this amazing Pirate theme and we are giving out a treasure map that kids will carry around the store to gather pirate themed items (eye patch, beards, gold coins, etc)

We will have Lego station (provided by BN), face painting, read alouds, Teachers’ Readers Theater (a specialty of ours) cupcake decorating (cupcakes for purchase) Lollipop pull for a chance to win pirate gear, pirate tattoos, photo booth, etc.

If you don’t want to go all in on a themed event, the previous two years we did NOT do a themed events, just had face painting (we brought supplies and provided a basic list of options) read alouds, Legos, cupcake decorating. Our families AND staff love it. It’s a fun evening and we have no problem getting volunteers to come and work OR just to shop.

The cashiers cannot ask if you have the school voucher and you can’t pass them out ON SITE but we send it home, put it on the website and really talk it up. The cashiers know that most people are with the school; they also put signs around the store and we always station people near the register to thank people for coming to our book fair. Parents have learned to mention that at check out.

This is the first year my school is doing gift wrapping but our sister school did it last year and said it was successful. It’s free, but they put a tip jar out and we get to keep that money too. We’ve made $800 each of the past two years (based on % of sales) which I think is awesome for something that doesn’t feel much like work.

If you are near Orland Park, IL tonight, our sister school is hosting their Pirate night from 6-8 and ours will be Weds 11/30 from 5:30-7:30 if you want to stop in at the Barnes and Noble in Orland (160 LaGrange Rd) to see one in action.

Hello, all.

I'm looking for your recommendations on a quality book fair company that would best fit a junior high audience. The volunteer organization who sponsors the one at our junior high has been unsatisfied with Scholastic's selection (a better fit for a younger audience). What are your thoughts on the following companies:

- Barnes and Noble
- Blue Ribbon
- Anderson's
- Any other company

Listserv responses are fine, but if you would prefer to speak privately, feel free to email me off-list at rfuller at rochester3a.net<mailto:rfuller at rochester3a.net>.

Sincerely,
Ms. Rachel Fuller
