We also charge the student the replacement cost. In the event it is found then I refund the students money.

In theory, our policy is to hold the student accountable. Occassionally
though, a situation that is so egregious occurs that the library eats the
cost. (I am thinking of the incident, where reading the referral and
knowing the kid, it was clearly a hate crime against a gay student where he
was cornered in a bathroom and all of his books were thrown in a toilet. He
was not charged for the replacement of the items.) Hold firm though for the
most part---otherwise everyone will have their books "stolen."
