I got rid of all 90 e-readers at our high school. We had original Kindle 1 & 2s, so their lifespan was minimal, they were difficult to purchase and manage titles, and they were not liked by the kids. Our kids prefer print books. We now focus our energy on ebook platforms that students can read on their own devices (we use Follett’s Destiny Discover). They don’t work on baseline Kindles or Nooks, but our families that can afford the e-readers can usually also afford books for them. I have had larger number of e-checkouts with Destiny Discover than I ever did having to load up titles on individual devices to check them out to students.

Unfortunately, the Follett e-books don't function on anything less than a Kindle Fire or iPad. I'm not sending those home... Neither Follett nor Amazon had any sympathy for my predicament. Each accused the other of not making the system work on a lower cost tablet.
