The classification of works in broad categories by logical abridgment, even when more specific numbers are available, e.g., the use of 641.5 Cooking instead of 641.5972 Mexican cooking for a cookbook of Mexican recipes. Broad classification is the opposite of close classification. See also Abridged edition<https://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/glossary/dewey.en.html#AbridgedEdition>; Close classification<https://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/glossary/dewey.en.html#CloseClassification>.

But my understanding of Dewey is that you can't just arbitrarily say you will limit all numbers to two decimal points. There are prime marks or slashes which indicate logical places to shorten a long classification number.

I use two numbers after the decimal point. It helps especially in the 900 to distinguish between the wars.

I only use the next two after the decimal point. My library is pretty small and I don't think there is a need for the same kind of specificity as a larger library. However, I wouldn't eliminate the numbers altogether, since I do still need to differentiate between certain topics.

I am re-thinking Dewey numbers – right now we go 2 decimal point out – does anyone just go 1 out or none at all? Pros? Cons?
