[ISLMA-Share] Books dealing with student death

Several years ago I created a website for a class and it saw enough traffic that I kept it going and updated. It is picture books that deal with death for librarians. When I first became an elementary librarian, I had a teacher run in frantically looking for the “dead guinea pig book!” I had no idea what she was talking about, but she did! The book was routinely used to read to classes when a student has experienced loss, such as a hamster, guinea pig or dog, but could even be used with human death, such as Grandparents. We found the book, and I was impressed with how comforting the books on this topic could be, if you know where they are! So this website has many different books, with basic breakdowns of each storyline. I hope it might help some elementary librarians or public librarians learn where the good books are when they are needed.

We lost a brother and sister on the Saturday before the start of the school year 3 years ago. It's tough to get through. Honestly the students are their own best resources (or at least ours were). They talked, cried, shared, laughed, remembered, etc. with each other, with the parents, with all of us. They are remembered often by all of us. There were shirts and bracelets made and sold in their memory and those brought everyone together. Their chairs were empty at their graduations and their parents acknowledged. We have a memorial bench and tress near the students entrance. (Sadly, we have several student memorials out there.)

I bought books on grief, but the students and the community were really the best help for all of us.

It is tough, but just being there for each other is the best "medicine". Hoping for you and your students.

Hello.

This weekend, two of our students in the high school where I work passed away in a motorcycle accident. I was wondering if any librarians had suggestions about reading material for teenagers, both fiction and nonfiction, that could help during this very difficult time. If this has happened before at anybody else's school, was there a resource that you found to be helpful or that students appreciated?

Thank you,
