I have a variety of feelings about Banned Books Week, but it definitely presents an opportunity to talk to our students about intellectual freedom and their rights as readers.

For the last few years, I’ve done a lesson with our 8th graders where they learn about the history of Banned Books Week & then do a “case study” of book challenges - I have one for Persepolis (right here in Chicago!), one for Eleanor & Park, and one for Into the River, a YA book that was actually banned in New Zealand. I’ve compiled a bunch of materials about each challenge (reviews; primary sources like emails, flyers, and newspaper articles; author’s response), along with questions for the students to either discuss or respond to in writing.

If these would be helpful to you, send me an email (off-list please!) and I’m happy to share any materials that interest you and/or my lesson plan.

"A book, too, can be a star, 'explosive material, capable of stirring up fresh life endlessly,' a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe."
― Madeleine L’Engle, from her Newbery Award acceptance speech for A Wrinkle in Time (1963)
