For many years, I have been having students fill out a half sheet as they
complete a Caudill. They list the book title, author, and write up to 4
sentences of why they liked, or disliked the book, including a brief
summary or possibly just a summary of their favorite part. The paper must
be signed by a parent or a teacher, as I really can't see if they READ the
book, only that it is checked out. We keep track of these in the library
and when students vote, they get a personal ballot with the books they read
highlighted. It seems to work fairly well... I may ask the occasional
question if I have any questions about what they have written...

I also started a "Caudill Club" in which students must read a certain
number of Caudills to be able to attend the meeting. Our first meeting will
be in October. They have to have read 1 Caudill. Our first meeting
meeting is called Caudill and Cookies, and I will provide cookies. In
November, they have to read 2 Caudills to attend. That meeting is Caudill
and Cupcakes... and so on... And they have to have turned in the signed
sheets to be able to participate. Nothing fancy, but these things have
worked nicely for me.

Good Luck!
