For National Poetry Month, we've done Save the Words of Poetry and that
went pretty well.  Also, I have made ones for *Watsons Go to Birmingham;
Touching Spirit Bear; Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie; *and* Woods Runner *to
introduce background material to the kids about their lit circle choices*. *I
adapted the Utopia/Dystopia one for *The Giver*. These are for blocked
classes and will take longer--about 50-75 minutes.

We also tried the Tell-Tale Heart one--and it went really well. We did
Grammar Guru and it didn't go as well as I would have liked. The invisible
ink didn't stay on our puzzles at all, and that ruined one whole key.
Also, the word search needed more directions so the kids knew to use the
leftover letters.

My next one is a Library Review for the sixth grade. I am not using the
directional lock for this one and made it very easy--I hope! It asks kids
to locate books according to call numbers for the 3 digit and 4 digit
locks, find a key in a biography, and find clues in the fiction section to
solve the word lock. I am hoping it doesn't take longer than 30 minutes.

The locks can be problematic, but I am still using the physical boxes. I
have five boxes, and for my next breakout, I will be setting the papers on
five team tables while the boxes are on a counter where the teacher will
stand so kids can't put paperclips, pens (yes, I have some budding
locksmiths/thieves!) and are not just randomly trying combos.

You also should join the Facebook group if you haven't already for
Breakout. Really good ideas on management--such as the lock parking garage
and how to deal with repeating classes using the same breakout throughout
the day. I loved the fact that one teacher said to connect with your
librarian to help reset each hour!
