I have not done the 40 books per year model, but I tell my 5th graders that
we will provide each child with a private printout of all the materials
they check out that school year. I remind them during the year. At the
end of the school year, each child analyzes her/his own reading....trends,
genres, media, NF topics, total checkouts. As that last library period
ends, I ask all the kids to raise their hands if they checked out 30 or
more titles that year. We go up to 50, 60, etc. I know that not all of
these books have been read, but I don't feel that anyone is crazy fibbing.
In the end, it is actually very gratifying for those students to get a
round of applause when we recognize the top numbers of checkouts.
