Let me start by saying we are a very small public school. Our junior high
(7th and 8th) graders have the opportunity to participate in "Reader
Leaders". To be included, they are asked to read and write a book report
on at least 10 recreational reads (and not to include reading for class)
between September and April. In May we celebrate those readers with a
pizza party and movie, as well as Reader Leaders t-shirts. They are also
recognized at the 8th grade promotion evening ceremony Depending on
finances, sometimes we order in, sometimes we go out for food, the same
with the movie. (A couple of years ago, The Jungle Book was about to
finish its local run, and the theatre opened and had a special showing just
for us--that was pretty cool.) We have also had bowling afternoons. The
readers really like being out of classes for even part of a day!
