Thank you all for the suggestions. I work in a K-5 school and it’s a few if the Little’s that I’m thinking about. Our whole school is free breakfast and lunch if that gives you a better idea of the situation.
Thanks again,
Sue

I always explain to the student that this approach is not for everyone so not to be publicized. The students understand. Then you can have them work as little or as much as you deem best. Quite frankly, in many students' homes, there is so much chaos that they cannot be held fully responsible.

In the worst case scenario that the book isn't returned, paid for or worked off, kids are still being enriched. I then consider the lost book a "donation," knowing everyone benefits when kids read and THINK.

For us it's 2 or 3 half hour increments - often not the value of the book, but enough that they get what's going on. If we have interaction with the parents, the parents are welcome to come work alongside their child.

Some duration so it makes an impact but not too burdensome for those that parents have to pick up. I'm rural and a high school.

I only do this after an extended period of trying to get the original book back. This way there is a consequence to their action. I eventually use the donated books as give-aways for Family Reading Night and other events.
