I just finished a visual literacy project with my 5th graders. We used
Molly Bang's Picture This Slide Presentation
<http://www.powershow.com/view2b/543c45-ZDhjZ/How_Pictures_Work_powerpoint_ppt_presentation>
 and book <http://www.mollybang.com/Pages/picture.html>. We talk about
'what gives pictures meaning.' In subsequent class times, students create
their own picture, using one of the compositional elements. We hang the
pictures in the hallway with a note about what we have learned.

This flows nicely into historical pictures that we will use as springboards
for a short research project.

Hope this helps! It's one of my favorites to teach.
