Good advice from Butch re: making a Live CD/USB.  I'd suggest going the USB
route since you can configure the drive for persistence when you're
building it to allow you to save changes to the image as you use it.  You'd
get a better feel for using it as your daily driver that way.

I haven't tried React, but I've been using Mint recently.  It uses the
Cinnamon desktop environment, which is very user friendly.  A bunch of
useful applications (gpart, gimp, VLC, etc) are included by default.  Also
has a nice "app store" if you (or a family member!) don't want to mess with
apt-get commands in the terminal.
