We do Battle of the Books as part of our library program. I do 4 battles
within each classroom and then the team from each class that has the most
accumulated points, gets to be in the Final Battle. So each class has 5-6
teams of 4-6 students. They do battles during their 40 min. library class.

I have between 8-10 copies of each book (maybe more of some). I get some
from To begin with, each student may only check out 1 battle book at a
time. I introduce the books the week before spring break and battles begin
in May. I send copies of the lists to three local libraries, so kids can
get books from there.

Students must read and pass quizzes on at least 3 books in order to be
placed on a team. I have the teachers make the teams so that they are
"even" The students get time to split up the list to try to make sure that
all the books on the list are read by the team.

We have been doing it this way for years, and it seems to work really
well. Each round has a different format to keep it fun.
