I would suggest reading Donalyn Miller’s books, The Book Whisperer and Reading in the Wild, for ideas. She talks a lot about building love of reading in her middle school class.

We use AR, but not the way the company wants you to follow it. We just use it to make sure kids are reading what they say they are. They can read whatever they want, whatever level. It works, but I also still booktalk, have three active book clubs during lunch, offer incentives for reading. It is expensive, but I can't imagine going back to not have some way to hold kids accountable by them just saying, "yes I read that," especially when parents are so willing to sign faked reading logs.

What is frustrating is seeing answers to the AR quizzes online!

We are debating getting rid of Accelerated Reader for grades 6-8. Would anyone like to share what happens in your library at the jr. high level?

How can we motivate kids to read and hold them accountable without using AR as our source?

We don´t want another computer program; we want them to want to read. We want to promote a love of reading. It seems that the love tends to deteriorate when they get into junior high.

Does anyone have the magic cure? ...or just some examples of things you do for jr. high students to excite them about reading...
