Hi Everyone,

Oh my brilliant colleagues I need your help! I have a teacher looking for
the title of a book that a student gave a moving speech in class. She
can't remember the title, but here's what she remembers:

   - Civil rights story
   - A kid calls another kid an ethnic slur and the word is specifically
mentioned in the text of the story
   - There were themes of 3's involved (she can't remember what they were)
   - The book was read in many 4th grade social studies classes at the time.
   - It was a well-known book.
   - The book was published before or around 1997

This teacher is making a speech about the importance of diversity in
schools and how

this particular book inspired a bi-racial child in her class to talk
eloquently about the meaning and burden the this particular word held for
him in his life.

Any ideas what book this could be? Thanks in advance!
