[ISLMA-Share] Nonfiction shelving

Before my 6th graders go to the shelves, I have run off mock spine labels on 8 ½ x 11 sheets of paper. The students are in groups of four or five and have to line themselves up like they should appear on a book shelf, holding the label in front of them like they are a book. This helps clear up decimal issues and alphabetizing before they go out into the shelves. The most challenging part of it is that students have to reverse themselves so that they line up for the classmates that are looking at them, not them looking at the numbers left to right.

I actually do this for each of our 5 sections so the students can see how each section is different on the spine label (i.e. nonfiction is author’s first three letters whereas biography is by subject’s.)

Prior to the class, I put a puzzle piece inside of each of the books. It's usually a small 25 piece of so puzzle. The student knows they've located the correct book when they find the puzzle piece hidden inside. Students put their puzzle pieces together to make the puzzle.
