Kapco's Easy Bind I Clear Polyester Repair Tape or Easy Bind II along with the glue will really reinforce your covers to your books, too.  Kapco has YouTube videos, too.  I hosted a Kapco book repair workshop for our district LRC Directors in the Fall, and if you haven't attended one, it's well worth your time.  Yes, there is special glue to use on books. I really like Demco's Norbond Liquid Plasic Adhesive. It's designed for book repair. When dry, it's clear and flexible. 
There are many good book repair videos on YouTube to give you some pointers on other repair issues.

Lately, many students have brought their textbooks to me for repair. The most common problem is that the spine has separated from the outside cover. I usually glue the spine back to the cover and then tape the insides with book tape. I put some rubberbands around the book for the glue to dry.
I have no idea if this is the best strategy for repairing large books. Does anybody have any better suggestions? Also, is there a special glue you use on the spine? I am currently just using Elmer's.
