I have the students go on a treasure hunt. I make a simple paper with each
100s category listed (just the numbers, no headings). Each section has 3
blank lines. They have to go find 3 topics for each 100 section (i.e.
cooking, drawing, songs/music, sports for 700s) The next week we discuss
the topics they found for each category and WHY they might be in the same
section. This helps them come up with their own classifications for each
100s section. We use those same topics play DEWEY, like BINGO. D=0-99 and
100s, E=200s/300s, W=400/500s etc. I also use a mystery bag game. I put
objects in the bag and one student pulls out an object then tells where
they would classify it. Other students "thumbs up" if they agree, thumbs
down if they don't. THEN other students could tell where else it MIGHT go
but have to defend why they think that. Same concept with the One Fish
book idea above. The kids like it. My concept is to have THEM figure out
the classifications instead of just telling them what they are.
