[ISLMA-Share] Traditional literature - heroes

May I pick the collective brain today?  We are working on a heroes unit for high achieving 4th grade students and we are currently planning the traditional literature part of the unit.  Suggestions on examples of heroes from classic literature and traditional lit?  We have Robin Hood, various mythological characters and some tall tales but we're looking for characters and excerpts from novels, short stories etc that are appropriate for high level 4th graders.  Feel free to email me off list and I'll compile responses and share them.
