[ISLMA-Share] copyright question

Please see the following question from one of my colleagues and give me
your thoughts.

*If a book is no longer available to purchase because they aren't printing
it any longer, is one free to make copies from it without violating any
copyright laws?  Wasn't sure if the copyright laws extend beyond so many
years after the copyright date. *
