[ISLMA-Share] Animal Research

Our 7th graders do research on an endangered species. They create a short documentary film using still images they get from internet (teach them to cite correctly), paired with their own narration. We used to use Photo Story 3 to do this (free download if you are a PC school), and now that we have Chromebooks, we use Powtoons.com to create the movie. We require at least two sources of information, a print source and an online source. It has been very effective.

I used to have 6th graders do artist research. They created a presentation board - the 3 section folding science fair board kind of thing - with their paper, examples of the art and an art project of their own in the style of the artist. Maybe you can adapt the idea to do a "zoo" including their paper and infographics about their animal and related issues - especially if you focus on endangered species and conservation. If you have access to younger students they could visit, or do a parent night.

How about having them create infographics about their animal. I did this with 5th grade last year but they were able to choose their topic of research. One girl researched ostriches. She found out the size of the egg, then tried to find an every day object to compare it to. She did the same thing for the height and weight. She had maps of where they are found in the wild, as well as maps of where they farm ostriches. I know she included graphs too, but can't recall what data it showed. I felt this activity helped them digest the information and think creatively about how to best represent the information. Since there are already some infographics on the internet about various animals, we made it a point that they couldn't recreate or copy infographics that were already out there.

Hello,
I am working with a seventh grade science teacher who is looking for a different way for students to present their animal research. We have had the students write papers and actually get up in front of the class to present using various tech tools (emaze, Powtoon, ToonDoo, etc). Now we would like to come up with another method. Anyone have some ideas for variety in the product?
