[ISLMA-Share] Applying call numbers to nonfiction using dewey decimal

One resource that I really love that I haven't seen yet (forgive if someone beat me to the punch!) is http://www.worldcat.org/

WorldCat lets you look at other public and school libraries that also have that book and search their catalogs for their Dewey numbers.

I think it's always important to remember, though, that the Dewey numbers are only a suggestion. You can catalog your collection in any way that will serve your population the best (for example, an early copy of Smile put it in Orthodonture!) . Sometimes a good place to start is where you have similar items already in your collection.

If you have Follett for your circulation system, the correct Dewey number will appear in the call number field when you input a new title. Our library always adds the first 3 letters of the author's,last name too.
Many books have the Library of Congress cataloguing info on the backside of one of the first pages.
Lastly the you can search the Library of Congress site. If you're interested in this option, let me know. I'll e-mail you the URL. I don't have it in my phone.
Good luck!

As a new librarian I need to apply new nonfiction call numbers to new books. What source do I use to apply the correct spine call number?

Need help as soon as possible.
