I am the Department Chair of two high school libraries. I hold an MLIS and teacher certification, but no administrative certification. I conduct performance evaluations of my library and administrative assistants, which are reviewed by an administrator in each building. I participate in both hiring and firing of library staff -- in both cases, administration has final say. I make all programming, collection development, and purchasing decisions -- again, this is subject to administrative review, but conflict is rare. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any additional questions.

Question to District librarians that oversee library assistants at schools across the district. Do you participate in hiring, firing and performance assessments of the assistants? Do you hold an admin cert? What is your authority over each school library in the district?
